Purse Cakes Plus “Baked” Cookbook Giveaway!!!

Thanks to everyone for your sweet comments about my niece’s birthday cake!  I had a great time doing it and it is so nice to receive such lovely compliments from all of you.  As a fun reward for being such a great blogging community I am going to do another giveaway (the real thanks goes to the “Baked” marketing team for giving me the books…THANKS!!!)  So make sure and check out the end of the post to get all of the details!

Before I share my mouth-watering photos of their salted caramel sauce I made I first wanted to show you the cute purse cakes that my students made last week. These cakes were filled, frosted, sculpted, and decorated in about 3 hours, so props to them.  Also, this was the first time most of them had attempted a carved cake, so I was doubly impressed! Hope you enjoy the photos!

Now onto the giveaway!  I have to say that I am absolutely smitten by the Baked cookbook!  The whole book is filled with gorgeous photos and mouthwatering recipes!  It has been by my bedside for the past month getting looked at over and over again.  I recently had the chance to try out their salted caramel sauce and I have to say that it is my new favorite flavor…this sauce will knock your socks off!  Here are the tempting photos I promised!  I will post the yummy recipe on Monday when I announce the winners!

I forgot to mention that I am giving away TWO Baked cookbooks so get excited because your chance of winning just went up!  All you need to do to enter the contest is name the type of purse that you think I should make for my new purse cake that I am making next week!  Remember the deadline is Sunday night…can’t wait to hear all of your ideas!

  1. Hmm. I’d like to try to win one of the cookbooks, but I don’t know about purses.

Sure, I have a couple. But the most “brand name” I get is a black with white polka dots purse I got from Target. And my other purse is one I bought during one of my town’s yearly fairs. Someone had a booth with homemade bags and such. So I bought a black and white bag made of a bunch of pieces of different fabrics.

I honestly have no idea about purses. I carry around a nice bag I got at TJ Maxx. It’s large enough to hold every piece of paper I’ve ever touched. I don’t know what the bags are called at Target, but they’re really nice. They also have nice clutches. I bought a nice clutch that kinda looked like black snakeskin and it had hot pink satin inside with a sparkly closure. Could be a cute cake!
    BTW–Your students are AMAZING!

  3. megan says:

My pick would be a Louis Vuitton handbag. That would make a great cake. Great giveaway. Throw my name in the bucket, would ya?

  4. Dana says:

If you’re doing a purse, you have to do the ultimate, quintessential dream purse – the Birkin by Hermes!

I see pretty crocodile embossing & silver accents. You’ll do Hermes proud!

(I am so totally jealous of your students, any chance you would travel to FL to teach a class or two??)

  5. Lucy says:

Wow all those cakes look absolutely amazing.
I think a cake just like a disco bag – covered some how in sparkles and sequins – would be absolutely stunning! Fingers crossed for the giveaway x

  6. Vicki says:

I’m with Amy – shiny crocodile would be awesome.

  7. Megan says:

A Sassy CLUTCH! maybe a knock-off of your black/white stencil cake [pun intended ;-) ]

I so wish I was closer to take one of your classes!! I’m a Kate Spade fan – but I’m sure no matter what you do it will be cute!

  13. Heather says:

Those cakes are lovely! The first one is my favorite.
Personally, I think Giuseppe Zanotti bags would make great cakes. They have pretty colors, and their shapes aren’t overly complicated. :)

  14. Lindsay says:

    A nice Kate Spade handbag!

I wish I lived closer so I could take one of your classes!!!!

  15. jan says:

these are way to cute! How about making a Prada bag.

  16. leana says:

Maxx New York bag, the patent leather type. They have so many cute styles to choose from and you brush gel on the fondant to give it the shiny patent look. They have one bag that has diamond pattern on side.

  17. pamela says:

Wow…salted caramel sauce sounds decadent, that’s for sure. Those cakes are very impressive! Purses…where to begin? I am thinking a Louis Vuitton would be a classic choice, even if we are talking about cake!

  18. Nova says:

    A Dior gaucho saddle bag..

  19. Lisa Smiley says:

Hi there! Would love to see the Dooney & Bourke giraffe print purse! How fun would that be? Have fun whatever you do…will be in your neck of the woods once again visiting the fam. Looking forward to some great weather! Have a great Thanksgiving!

  20. Angie says:

I love the first one! So classic.

  21. Shelley says:

I think a Dooney & Bourke heart-print purse or the classic D&B print where the initials are interspersed with diamond and circle shapes, etc.

  22. grace says:

i’m sorry to say that i don’t know the first thing about fancy purses–mine’s a good ol’ target buy. :) i’ve at least heard of kate spade, though, so let’s go with that.

  26. Michele says:

Beautiful purses Melody! The details and overall effects are amazing. The Prada “Pochette” would make a great cake: dusty pink with fuschia tangerine flowers. Thanks for the giveaways – I hope to be one of the lucky winners…Take care, Michele

  30. Gina Florenci says:

Hello there, nice job on your purses! I think you should go for a Louis Vouiton, thanks…Gina

  31. Elizabeth says:

Well, I’m picturing like a purse the flappers had, with all the fringe and stuff. It would probably be kinda hard, but has the potential to look awesome.

  32. Maja says:

The purses look great! How was the gold vintage flower pattern done on the fifth? An awesome purse cake would be one with beads, i have this ooold small purse that has a whole forrest scene made with beads … think gobelins, but with colorful small beads :) … it would be loborious, but it would also look like a million bucks! :)

  33. Milly says:

These are the difficult questions of our time. :) I kind of like the idea of a Johnny Cupcakes purse (http://www.johnnycupcakes.com/design/845/KitchenHandbagWhite) – a cake based off a purse from a cupcake-themed clothing company. Though, that’s a much-patience-required kind of project…

The cakes from your students are just fantastic! And extremely impressive. I’m somewhat partial to the last purse because I love the chains and the loops, but then again I like the M too. (And then again I love that gold (stencil?) design, and the Chanel purse, and…)

  34. amychristina says:

love the chanel purse! so cute… if you’re looking for a new one, i’d try a classic coach bag. great job!

  39. ssommerville says:

I love the purse themed cakes. How about a satchel purse?

  40. Carolyn Jung says:

Which is more expensive? The cake Chanel bag or the real Chanel bag? ;)

  42. Crystal says:

I LOVE the silver purse with the star! That is my pick! Amazing as always!

  43. Mary says:

It’s been said before but anything Kate Spade… Or maybe like your Anthropologie newspaper bag from years ago… that would be a challenge!

  44. Elaine says:

You can bet this will be by my bedside too. Immense creativity in your student’s creations!

  45. Elaine says:

and my favorite is the silver one at the end! :)

  46. Courtney says:

Those look amazing! I say go for a Coach purse, for sure.

I don’t know much about name brand purses but one with jewels on it would be so pretty to show off all your talent. I wish i could do as well as your students did with these purses.

  48. Rachel says:

I’m thinking a Hermes Birkin bag would be gorgeous made into a cake.
It’s got such a beautiful classic shape and the simple lines would be really striking.
You’ve got such great skills with fondant and getting the edges so perfect, this style of bag would really suit your decorating style!

  49. Emiline says:

    Cuuuuute purses! Love them.

You should make a gold Prada purse…

  50. Marilyn says:

A Chanel purse would be lovely. So would anything else, though–these purse-cakes are gorgeous!!
