Baby Shower Cake Plus Cookies & Cupcakes

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

There will be more photo shoots pictures to come, but in the meantime I wanted to share with you a recent baby shower cake I did.  This was for a fun mommy-to-be and she basically said she wanted a cute, girly cake for her little princess, so this is what I created!  The inside was Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting…yummy!

Here are some photos along the way of the process…

These other two photos are of recent orders…the first was for a law school graduate who wanted the weight scale on his cookies with the school’s colors.  The last photo is of a mini Red Velvet Cupcake with Cream Cheese Frosting.  We then made mini sugar flowers to match the invitations.

Thanks for stopping by and checking out my sweets!

Photo Shoot Sneak Peak Plus Winner

Monday, April 27th, 2009

First off, sorry for being a horrible blogger and not announcing the winner on Thursday like I said!  I really do have an excuse though…I pulled 14-16 hour days four days in a row this past week and was basically out of touch with reality.  I had so many jobs in such a short amount of time, but I am happy to say that I didn’t cry (cheers for me), I did it with a good attitude (most of the time), and everything turned out great!

I have a lot of exciting news that I will be sharing with you all soon, but wanted to start off with a sneak peak of my photo shoot that I got to do with Ryel J Photography!  As I am trying to take my business to the next level, Ryel was kind enough to give me a photo shoot so I could have some professional quality shots for my new website that my hubby is working on and for magazines coming up.  I was absolutely thrilled with the photos she captured and can’t wait to share them all with you soon, but for now here is a teaser!

Well, onto the good stuff!  Thank you all for entering this last fun giveaway!  I absolutely loved hearing your entries and I am so excited that three of you get to taste Martine’s delicious and adorable chocolates yourselves!  The winners are…

#23 Emma

#25 Cindy

#60 Doreen

Please email me so I can pass along your information to Martine’s Chocolates!

Nurse Cake & Fun Giveaway

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

One thing I like about being in business for myself is that I get to do a little bit of everything…sugar flowers, cupcakes, cookies, and of course carved cakes.  Out of everything I do, making carved cakes has to be the most challenging I think.  I have basically had to teach myself everything I’ve learned in this arena.  I was privileged to take a class from Bronwen Weber a couple years ago, which helped me get inspired to challenge myself even more when it is came to carved cakes.  I still feel like I have lots to learn when it comes to these types of cakes, but always learn something new when I make a new cake.

This recent cake was requested from a college student who wanted to surprise his girlfriend, who was a nurse, with a fun cake for her birthday.  He wasn’t able to see her on her birthday and thought this would be a great way to show he was thinking of her.  When I dropped the cake off it definitely seemed like he accomplished his goal…she was so excited and was beaming with joy!  That is why I love making cakes!  So without further ado here is the nurse cake!

I took a couple pictures along the way so you could see the process.  This cake was chocolate cake with whipped cream and fresh strawberries.  I then covered the cake in vanilla swiss meringue buttercream and covered it in pink fondant.

I added some fun details to the cake to bring it to life…a personalized name tag (printed on edible frosting sheets), fondant scissors, a pen, and stethoscope.  I painted the metal items with silver lust dust and vodka to make it look more realistic.  In this next photo you can see the difference the luster dust makes…

Now for the giveaway…The great people at Martine’s Chocolates sent me over some delicious and adorable chocolates and they wanted to share the fun treats with you too!  They are giving away three of their famous chocolate dogs to three of my lucky readers.  Definitely check out this website and see all the wonderful gift ideas that they have!  To enter the contest all you have to do is tell me which one of their chocolate dogs you love the most!  I will announce the three winners Thursday!

Can’t wait to her all of your entries!  **Just a note…the winner will receive one of the smaller dogs, but I just wanted to show off a lot of their dogs so you could see their wide selection AND I also wanted to hear which ones were your favorites!

Eye Candy

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Well, it has been quite a while since I have blogged!  Life has been very busy and full of lots of fun!  These photos are from some recent orders I did and I thought I would share them with you!

These first photos are of a recent bridal shower cake my sister and I made for my new sister-in-law to be! We knew we wanted to make a new type of sugar flower so my sister created this gorgeous pink garden rose. It was so beautiful that I thought it should be the main focus of the cake and went with a more simplistic look overall.

The inside of the cake was chocolate cake with layers espresso kahlua cream cheese frosting, chocolate ganache, and chocolate valrhona crunchies.  I then covered the whole cake with vanilla buttercream and a thin layer of fondant.

This next order was for 75 corporate baskets of goodies.  This order basically consumed my life for 3 days straight…300 cookies, 300 brownies, and 75 bags of caramel nut crunch mix!  I was quite happy with how they turned out though and it was fun knowing they would be shipped all over the US!

This next cookie I made for a friend of mine, Jesi Haack, who is a fabulous wedding and event planner.  She wanted custom logo cookies to pass out to her clients and vendors and so I came to the rescue!

Lastly, I made a kid’s birthday cake the other week.  Elmo was the main star of the cake and it ended up a fun theme overall.  The cake was chocolate and buttermilk cake with whipped cream and fresh strawberries.

Well, I hope you all had a Happy Easter last weekend!  Thanks for all the love and support!

Featured in The Knot & Southern California Brides!!!

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Well, I have been wanting to share this wonderful news with all of you for a LONG time, but I had to wait until I had the magazine images in hand so I could show you the FABULOUS news!  As you can tell from the title…my cake and cookies were featured in not one, but two top wedding magazines!  I couldn’t believe my ears when Karrie, the bride and one of my best friends, said that The Knot had contacted her talented photographer, Amy Squires, about publishing her wedding as a featured “real wedding” in their national magazine!  We both screamed and jumped up and down and patiently waited as the issue came to print. Then we ran down to Border’s and picked up our own copies to share with friends and family!  To let a little secret out I actually had to end up frosting, decorating, and stacking the whole cake at the hotel room the night and morning of the wedding since it was in San Diego and I needed to be there for all the festivities too (that’s what friends are for right!)  Well all my pain, sweat, and tears paid off when I saw Karrie and Brian’s face as they saw the cake…getting published in a magazine was just the cherry on top!

Another funny thing is that TheKnot.com is actually featuring Karrie & Brian’s wedding as their featured “Wedding of the Week” this week on their website!  Check it out here!

For everyone that doesn’t know Karrie, she is one of the most talented people I know.  I go to her for everything…her opinion, expertise on decorating, getting my website designed, and anything else I can think of!  She is a graphic designer who specializes in website design and custom invitations, but really can basically do anything creative!  She designed and made everything for her wedding decorations and I am so glad that The Knot recognized her amazing talent!

Well, if getting in one magazine wasn’t enough I was contacted by Southern California Brides about my silhouette cookies that I made for their wedding.  They loved that I custom made the cookie cutters to match the bride and groom’s exact silhouettes and then designed the cake to incorporate their modern color scheme and design.

I thought I would leave you with these pictures of the beautiful bride and I…thanks so much Karrie for designing an amazing wedding and asking me to help along the way!  Love you!
