Sweet & Saucy Shop on TLC’s Fabulous Cakes

So hopefully by now all of you have had a chance to see our Fabulous Cakes episode on TLC!  It was such a great experience and I feel really blessed to have been asked to do it.  To tell you the truth it was a last minute whirlwind experience that I basically only had 2 days to plan for.  I had been in contacts with TLC for a while about me pitching a wedding for the show and each time it fell through and then 2 days before Kristin & Michael’s wedding they confirmed everything and I said yes!  We had cameras in our studio for 3 days straight and let me tell you that is quite an experience.  I had no clue what they would use and how they would edit me and my shop, but overall I was really happy with how it turned out!

It was such a pleasure to work on Kristin & Michael’s wedding and I could not of asked for a better couple for this show.  I was actually already booked for their wedding when I was approached for the show and when they said they were up for it too I was so happy.  We basically made their cake bigger & better than we had planned it to be and even threw in a groom’s cake (which I will talk about later).

Kristen from The Treasured Petal did an amazing job with the floral design…I was seriously blown away by it!

This is the first time I had the pleasure of Michael Norwood shooting a wedding of mine and it was truly a pleasure; his photos are simply breathtaking.

This wedding definitely wouldn’t have been the same without the incredibly talented and sweet Angel Swanson of Events of Love & Splendor who did the wedding planning & design!  She made my job so easy!

Once I met with Kristin I was so inspired by her and her creativity.  She designed and made the invitations herself and I have to say they are some of the most gorgeous ones I have seen.  She pulled such inspiration from the location of Rancho Las Lomas and really wanted to pull in the spanish tiles that they had there, spanish style lace, and of course her grandmother’s vintage buttons (if you watched the show)!

We made silicone molds of her grandmother’s buttons, handpainted the tile design on the cake, took the tile pattern and used it for a depression & impression on the cake, made a giant sugar flower anenome flower since that was her favorite and finally lined the cake with spanish lace.  This cake was certainly one of my most daring designs that pushed the envelope, but I was truly proud of it once it all came together.  I LOVED how Michael captured their reaction when they first saw their wedding cake!

Of course we also had do to a full on dessert bar for them as well!  Angel did a fabulous backdrop for us that really made it all pop!  We made custom sugar cookies with Kristin’s printed designs, cake lollipops, mini cupcakes, mini key lime pies, and chocolate chunk cookies

One interesting aspect of the wedding and show is that I was actually asked to make a second cake that would be featured as well, so Kristin wanted to surprise Mike with a groom’s cake.  Kristin and Mike love their dog Baxter like a child and he was even a part of their wedding party.  Kristin thought Mike would flip if I made a 3D dog for him and so that was my mission. There was actually quite a lot of drama that occurred with me making Baxter (which would’ve made for great TV), but I guess they ran out of time for the episode so that is why he didn’t make it on the show.  Nonetheless here is the cute little guy!

Again I loved seeing their reaction!

Thanks so much to my incredible team at the shop…we all know I could never do anything with you!  A special thanks to my mom who keeps me sane, encourages me daily, gives me the best advice a girl could ask for, and is the most amazing business partner ever!

It was suck a pleasure to see this show, and you are so inspiring! Its really fun to see a cake designer who is so artistic and creative. I also appreciated that the show was low on drama and high on showing techniques and the cakes built from scratch.

I have to admit that on another episode I was pretty horrified by one bakery that used no filling in the cakes, gosh they must have been dry! And another bakery who did a stunning 5 tier cake and it looks like it was only supported with drinking straws! Yikes! I guess it just makes sweet and saucy look even more professional, and its clear that your cakes are totally delicious too!

I am so disapointed that I have not been able to watch the episode… Do you know when it will be on again or how I can see it?

So funny, I was just flipping through the guide last night and saw that Fabulous Cakes was on, I was so happy to catch it! That cake was beautiful, and I have to admit I cannot believe you are so successful at 26, I am so envious (in a good way). I could only dream to have my own bakery, I just so wish I took another path! I am so happy for you!

The cake is amazing – I wonder if I can google the episode to see when it will be on again? If you know when it will be on, definitely post it!

I missed the show but will check online when It will air again. You are truly a very talented individual and have come very far. Much success to you!

Not a biggie, but I’m sure you would like to know. Your last paragraph has a tiny little error and I’m sure your staff knows how you feel.

Mel, it was so much fun to watch the show…the only thing better would have been watching with you as you gave a running commentary of everything that really went on! I know alot was edited out, but your shop sure came across as classy and professional…great job!
