Lots of Specialty Cakes

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Get ready to be bombarded with LOTS of cakes!  Since hiring Kyong on full time we have had an opportunity to take on a lot more cakes and we have had a great time! Everything from chickens to Vegas cakes….if you can dream it, we can make it! First up one of my favorites…our Bun in the Oven Cake!  A client showed up a photo of a cake that the Cake Girls had done a while back, which I had always loved, and so we did our own take on it.

The couple didn’t know what they were having so we put the last name of the couple on the “bun”…little Baby Zaby will be coming out soon!

We get to work on lots of fun events that Marie from, Sweets Indeed, puts on & the details  she puts into her table design is fabulous!

This cake was one we did for Lucia of Utterly Engaged.  Her brother & his wife had a baby shower & she got this cake for them. It matched the adorable invitation she designed.

Next up is a Vegas Cake we did for a birthday party and I have to say Kyong did a great job on the details!

This next cake was a unique groom’s cake we did this last weekend.  I don’t know all the symbolism to it, but I think it’s great that the bride had us incorporate so many fun, corky details to the cake that mean something to both of them.

Lastly a Harley Davidson Cake we did…I just love how Kyong’s sugar flames turned out!

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

I bet many of you have seen this fun wedding all over the blogosphere, but of course I had to share it too since I did the desserts for it!  Max & Margo had such a personal wedding that looks like such a joy to go to!  They had a intimate ceremony with close family and friends and then the next day had a bigger celebration!  Love that idea!  The definitely picked a team of great vendors to help them with their special day and since there were a lot of them you can check them out at then end of the post!  Special thanks to Labor of Love for the great photos!

Hollywood Hills Wedding

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

When I first met Heath &  Olivia I was blown aways with just how gorgeous of a couple they were.  They were truly in love and beaming from ear to ear.  Their photos were no different and really made me pause for a second and just stare at the beautiful location, food, friends, and decor!  Uyen from Sassy Girl Weddings & Events did an amazing job on this wedding and is always a joy to work with!  This was my first time working with Float Away Studios and I can’t believe how gorgeous their photography is! The setting for the wedding was at the beautiful Villa Fiona in the Hollywood Hills…what a great find that was!

They had their monogram featured throughout their wedding and wanted to include it on the cake too.  For the cake they wanted a modern, clean black and white cake.  We added a little texture to it by adding white fondant bands all up the cake with a central black band in the middle.  They did lots of fun mini desserts too!

Sweet & Saucy Shop on TLC’s Fabulous Cakes

Monday, August 9th, 2010

So hopefully by now all of you have had a chance to see our Fabulous Cakes episode on TLC!  It was such a great experience and I feel really blessed to have been asked to do it.  To tell you the truth it was a last minute whirlwind experience that I basically only had 2 days to plan for.  I had been in contacts with TLC for a while about me pitching a wedding for the show and each time it fell through and then 2 days before Kristin & Michael’s wedding they confirmed everything and I said yes!  We had cameras in our studio for 3 days straight and let me tell you that is quite an experience.  I had no clue what they would use and how they would edit me and my shop, but overall I was really happy with how it turned out!

0099

It was such a pleasure to work on Kristin & Michael’s wedding and I could not of asked for a better couple for this show.  I was actually already booked for their wedding when I was approached for the show and when they said they were up for it too I was so happy.  We basically made their cake bigger & better than we had planned it to be and even threw in a groom’s cake (which I will talk about later).

This wedding definitely wouldn’t have been the same without the incredibly talented and sweet Angel Swanson of Events of Love & Splendor who did the wedding planning & design!  She made my job so easy!

Once I met with Kristin I was so inspired by her and her creativity.  She designed and made the invitations herself and I have to say they are some of the most gorgeous ones I have seen.  She pulled such inspiration from the location of Rancho Las Lomas and really wanted to pull in the spanish tiles that they had there, spanish style lace, and of course her grandmother’s vintage buttons (if you watched the show)!

0004

0083

0084

We made silicone molds of her grandmother’s buttons, handpainted the tile design on the cake, took the tile pattern and used it for a depression & impression on the cake, made a giant sugar flower anenome flower since that was her favorite and finally lined the cake with spanish lace.  This cake was certainly one of my most daring designs that pushed the envelope, but I was truly proud of it once it all came together.  I LOVED how Michael captured their reaction when they first saw their wedding cake!

Of course we also had do to a full on dessert bar for them as well!  Angel did a fabulous backdrop for us that really made it all pop!  We made custom sugar cookies with Kristin’s printed designs, cake lollipops, mini cupcakes, mini key lime pies, and chocolate chunk cookies

One interesting aspect of the wedding and show is that I was actually asked to make a second cake that would be featured as well, so Kristin wanted to surprise Mike with a groom’s cake.  Kristin and Mike love their dog Baxter like a child and he was even a part of their wedding party.  Kristin thought Mike would flip if I made a 3D dog for him and so that was my mission. There was actually quite a lot of drama that occurred with me making Baxter (which would’ve made for great TV), but I guess they ran out of time for the episode so that is why he didn’t make it on the show.  Nonetheless here is the cute little guy!

Again I loved seeing their reaction!

Thanks so much to my incredible team at the shop…we all know I could never do anything with you!  A special thanks to my mom who keeps me sane, encourages me daily, gives me the best advice a girl could ask for, and is the most amazing business partner ever!

Wedding Season has Begun!!!

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Boy have we been busy, busy, busy at the shop!  Two weeks ago I had 8 weddings in one weekend, this weekend we have 6, and next weekend we have 8 again!  With that being said, I have LOTS of fun photos to share with you and I hope you enjoy them!

This first cake might be one of my favorites yet!  I recently hired on a new employee, Kyong, who interned with us at the shop for 2 months & right from the start I saw how talented she was at cake decorating.  She paints flawlessly & it truly has become one of my favorite touches to add to wedding cakes!

IMG_9519.JPG

We decided to add sugar orchids to the top of the cake and Sara did an amazing job with them!

IMG_9516.JPG

IMG_9517.JPG

IMG_9509.JPG

I made a large sugar ruffle at the bottom and it was all finished!

IMG_9518.JPG

IMG_9508.JPG

The next wedding cake I took inspiration from their wedding invitation and did the circle pattern all over the cake!  I loved it!

IMG_9218.JPG

We then accented the cake with ruffly style anenome flowers!  Overall I loved the color combo and design!

IMG_9240.JPG

They also wanted a lot of fun mini desserts & I have to say that their dessert tags the bride got were beyond adorable!

IMG_9226.JPG

IMG_9232.JPG

I have also had the pleasure of doing a lot of fun groom’s cakes lately.  This next cake was my first football helmet & I was pleasantly surprised with how it turned out!  The whole thing is cake & then we used bendable pipe to make the front of the mask.

The wedding cake that went with this groom’s cake was equally fun!  She wanted to incorporate her color scheme of copper & sage, her damask pattern, and the orchid’s & butterflies that were going to be at her wedding…and this is what we came up with!

Everything on the cake is made out of sugar!

Lastly we had the pleasure of doing another small, yet intricate cake for a recent wedding in which I just fell in love with the design.  The handpainting & sugar flower definitely make it one of a kind!  The pattern was taken off of the ring bearer pillow & I think it transferred beautifully onto the cake.

Brandon & Kristin Kidd’s Wedding

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

I had the pleasure of being a part of Brandon Kidd & his now lovely wife Kristin’s wedding!  I bet many of you have seen these images all over the web because their wedding truly was one of a kind.  They had an amazing team of vendors and of course the lovely Jasmine Star shot the gorgeous photos & you can check out her blog to see all of them!  Green Wedding Shoes also featured the fabulous wedding!

Lauryl Lane used raw cotton & lots of organic woodsy style florals & I truly loved them!  And Eva from Red Velvet Occasions planned the whole day flawlessly!
