Crazy Detailed Cakes

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Sometimes when people call us to order a cake it is for a simple, basic designed cake and then other times we talk with clients who want over the top cakes with tons of detail and lots of their personality in it….these are definitely those types of cakes!

First up this is one of the largest celebration cakes we’ve ever done.  We made this crazy, fun Bat Mitzvah cake for the sweetest girl Abby who actually saw us on TLC’s Fabulous Cakes.  We had a ton of fun incorporating all of her favorite things into this one cake!

And of course all the details are made out of sugar!  Don’t you love the Tom’s shoes that Kyong made!

This next cake was made for Nickelodeon.  The Gir and Pig characters were quite fun to see made into cake!

One of our great repeat customers wanted a favorite things cake for her husband’s 40th birthday party, so we came up with this wild and crazy cake!

This next cake was for a client who wanted to mimic the golf setting that her husband plays golf at…it was a very interesting concept for a tiered style cake, but Kyong did a great job!

Gotta love the groom’s cakes!  This bride wanted a cake that symbolized her husbands favorite pastime…FOOTBALL of course! And when football is your favorite sport that means a lot of couch time together :)

Lots of New Specialty Cakes

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

I have lots of fun specialty cakes to share with you!  My team at the shop is so awesome and I definitely relay on them for SO much around the shop.  Kyong in particular does most of the cakes with me and she is especially talented and loves making special occasion cakes!  A lot of these cakes are all Kyong, so I definitely need to brag about her!  She is a great part of the team and I’m definitely blessed by her!

First up, a groom’s cake we made for a sports lover!  His bride surprised him by combining all three of his favorite teams on one cake!

We definitely do lots of baby shower cakes and a lot of clients love the baby feet so we have found ways to incorporate them into different cake designs.

Old School Glamour

This wedding is pure beauty!  The couple, the flowers, the venue…..everything is simply breathtaking!  I had a such a great time working with Lauren on her wedding and she was a true dream bride.  She really valued my opinion and trusted in me to pull off her vision!  Hayley & Nate did the set up for this wedding and Carissa from JL Designs did the flowers  & design for the wedding and our lovely mini dessert bar as well!  The talented Yelena Johnson, of The Stylish Soiree, also did the gorgeous wedding design too & I have to say that I loved every detail.  Thanks to Aaron Delesie for the beautiful photos!

No onto the desserts!  We did a full mini dessert bar filled with mini cupcakes, cookies, and cake lollipops!  I really wish we could’ve done their wedding cake too, but it came with the venue.  At least Lauren came up with a great idea and we surprised Brian with a boxing glove cake since he is loves watching & participating in boxing matches.

Carved Cakes: Soccer Ball & Nike Shoe

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

For those blog followers of mine who have been following me since the beginning they know that I use to do a lot of tutorials and I really quite enjoyed doing them! Sadly with the growth of my business I haven’t had very much time to do in depth tutorials, but quite often I get asked to do more of them.  The past couple of months we have been doing a lot more sculpted cakes and I thought that I would photograph the steps a little bit more in hopes that the visuals would give a peak into how we made them.  I hope you enjoy it & learn a thing or two…I know I do every time we do one of these cakes :)

First up was a cake we got requested for a rehearsal dinner.  The groom loved his Nike Air Jordan shoes and his fiance wanted us to recreate his favorite pair.  It was a lot of fun & quite yummy too!  Here are the photots!

IMG_1202

You definitely have to first start with really delicious cake…for this cake it was chocolate nutella hazelnut cake!

IMG_1171

IMG_1178

IMG_1179

I then always coat my cakes in swiss meringue buttercream and normally fondant too.

IMG_1180

IMG_1181

Time for the details and boy were there a lot of them.

IMG_1196

IMG_1197

I forgot to photograph some details along the way, so my apologies, but here is the final cake!

The other fun carved cake we did that week was for another groom’s cake.  This time the bride wanted us to make her husband, who was a huge Liverpool fan, a large soccer ball complete with the Liverpool logo!

IMG_1262

This time we started with carrot cake & cream cheese frosting!

IMG_1229

IMG_1231

IMG_1233

IMG_1230

IMG_1235

I put one large dowel in the middle of the cake and cut it to the top of the cake just for a little extra stability.

IMG_1236

Once I have the basic shape then I start fine tuning the shape with a serrated knife and then put a layer of swiss meringue buttercream over the whole cake.

IMG_1237

Kyong made the job a lot easier when she brought in a cookie cutter in the shape of a pentagon.  Then we printed off the computer a shape of a hexagon that matched the sides of the pentagon and laminated it with tape.  These are the shapes we used to cut the basic puzzle pieces for this soccer ball cake.  We had also previously fondanted a cake board with green fondant for the soccer ball to sit on it.

The finished soccer ball, now all we have to add in the edible printed logo for the Liverpool team.
