Sweet & Saucy Shop on TLC’s Fabulous Cakes

Monday, August 9th, 2010

So hopefully by now all of you have had a chance to see our Fabulous Cakes episode on TLC!  It was such a great experience and I feel really blessed to have been asked to do it.  To tell you the truth it was a last minute whirlwind experience that I basically only had 2 days to plan for.  I had been in contacts with TLC for a while about me pitching a wedding for the show and each time it fell through and then 2 days before Kristin & Michael’s wedding they confirmed everything and I said yes!  We had cameras in our studio for 3 days straight and let me tell you that is quite an experience.  I had no clue what they would use and how they would edit me and my shop, but overall I was really happy with how it turned out!

It was such a pleasure to work on Kristin & Michael’s wedding and I could not of asked for a better couple for this show.  I was actually already booked for their wedding when I was approached for the show and when they said they were up for it too I was so happy.  We basically made their cake bigger & better than we had planned it to be and even threw in a groom’s cake (which I will talk about later).

Kristen from The Treasured Petal did an amazing job with the floral design…I was seriously blown away by it!

This is the first time I had the pleasure of Michael Norwood shooting a wedding of mine and it was truly a pleasure; his photos are simply breathtaking.

This wedding definitely wouldn’t have been the same without the incredibly talented and sweet Angel Swanson of Events of Love & Splendor who did the wedding planning & design!  She made my job so easy!

Once I met with Kristin I was so inspired by her and her creativity.  She designed and made the invitations herself and I have to say they are some of the most gorgeous ones I have seen.  She pulled such inspiration from the location of Rancho Las Lomas and really wanted to pull in the spanish tiles that they had there, spanish style lace, and of course her grandmother’s vintage buttons (if you watched the show)!

We made silicone molds of her grandmother’s buttons, handpainted the tile design on the cake, took the tile pattern and used it for a depression & impression on the cake, made a giant sugar flower anenome flower since that was her favorite and finally lined the cake with spanish lace.  This cake was certainly one of my most daring designs that pushed the envelope, but I was truly proud of it once it all came together.  I LOVED how Michael captured their reaction when they first saw their wedding cake!

Of course we also had do to a full on dessert bar for them as well!  Angel did a fabulous backdrop for us that really made it all pop!  We made custom sugar cookies with Kristin’s printed designs, cake lollipops, mini cupcakes, mini key lime pies, and chocolate chunk cookies

One interesting aspect of the wedding and show is that I was actually asked to make a second cake that would be featured as well, so Kristin wanted to surprise Mike with a groom’s cake.  Kristin and Mike love their dog Baxter like a child and he was even a part of their wedding party.  Kristin thought Mike would flip if I made a 3D dog for him and so that was my mission. There was actually quite a lot of drama that occurred with me making Baxter (which would’ve made for great TV), but I guess they ran out of time for the episode so that is why he didn’t make it on the show.  Nonetheless here is the cute little guy!

Travel Themed Wedding

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

There are certain weddings that you know are just going to be dreamy and this one was definitely one of them!  Once I heard that Stephanie Williams was photographing it I was super giddy as she always captures gorgeous images!  Maya & Joe wanted their wedding to really reflect them & their love of traveling.  I thought Shana Fu did an amazing job helping them pull this love of their’s throughout the wedding.  The images really capture how beautiful the day was and just how happy Maya & Joe were to become husband & wife!

Adorable 1st Birthday Party

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Well I am starting to be a pathetic blogger again, so my apologies!  I wanted to get some fun eye candy up even though I am about to fall asleep at the computer! These adorable photos were taken at a 1st birthday party I had the pleasure of doing the desserts for.  She wanted the party to have a girlie, vintage feel to it and I think it came out gorgeous!

IMG_7494.JPG

We decided to do a center cake with edible lace and a large pink peony sugar flower.

IMG_7460.JPG

IMG_7470.JPG

Audrey’s mom made all the adorable details for the party, like the amazing backdrop, frames, flowers etc.  She got a lot of inspiration from a first birthday that I had the pleasure of doing with Sarah K. Chen, Linda Ly, & Carissa from JL Designs.

Details Details

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Hopefully you know by now that I believe that it’s the details that are most important!  No matter what event you are trying to put on and no matter what budget you have you can definitely make your event unforgettable if you spend time on the details. This wedding is a perfect example of that!  The fabulous Jesi Haack was at it again and outdid herself with creative touches throughout the event that pulled through the passion and personality of her clients.   The main color scheme for their wedding was black, white, and apple green and we definitely had a lot of fun with it!  The fabulous venue was the Red Horse Barn and the wonderful rentals were from Classic Party Rentals!  Thanks to Matthew Morgan we have gorgeous images of the special day!  I think he captured the couple, Ryan & Danielle, perfectly!   Of course I had to throw in some of my photos as well since I am obsessed with my camera!

As always Jesi made me a fantastic backdrop for my dessert display!  Danielle and Ryan wanted to go a little more rustic and homespun with the desserts so we did six individual cakes for them with different fillings and frostings so their guests could choose their favorite.  They wanted to offer their guests a variety of mini desserts too.  We used black cake stands, plates, and green liners to pull the color scheme through.

I normally am not a huge fan of cake toppers because they are usually boring and don’t have any personal touches to them, but I LOVED this one!  It added such a fun aspect to the dessert display…great find Danielle!

Sarah & Cezanne’s Wedding

Friday, July 24th, 2009

I have been waiting for a while to post this uber-fun wedding!  I knew when I first met the couple that this was going to be very creative and beautiful wedding!  They had such fabulous ideas and weren’t scared of putting in the extra time to pull off a one-of-a-kind dessert display.  Not only were they super creative, but their wedding planner and my personal friend, Jesi Haack of Jesi Haack Weddings, is one of those people who is SO talented and loves pulling off gorgeous, yet unique events!  Thanks so much to my other friend, Adrianne Bonafede, who is a great photographer and came along with me to help capture a lot of these yummy images.  Their wedding photographer, Juan Posada, of Posada Photo shot some lovely images too and was kind enough to share them with me!

On a side note I wanted to say “THANK YOU” to all my blog readers because this past week I passed the 1,000,000 view mark!!! I could’ve never imagined having that many views on my site…when my husband first suggested I start writing a blog I thought he was crazy…I remember saying to him “Who would want to read what I write and look at my silly little photos!”  BUT I guess I was mistaken, and I have to say thanks for proving me wrong!  This has been so much fun and I absolutely love getting to connect with people all over the world through this silly little blog!

Here is a little behind the scenes info about the wedding via Jesi Haack’s blog…

“This clean, modern, design inspired wedding showcased Sarah and Cezanne’s love for ultra-hip designer, Jonathan Adler and The Parker, a chic resort in Palm Springs. From the custom designed monogram, courtesy of the groom, to the fruity, Creamsicle signature cocktails, it was impossible for their guests not to feel drenched in chic exuberance.  Each reception table claimed the name of one of the couples’ favorite mid century designers and the fortune cookie favors illustrated the story of their engagement.  Everywhere they looked the guests were refreshed with an eyeful of buttercream yellow, tangerine orange and lime green detail.  The tantalizingly tempting dessert display had every taste bud in the room screaming for a mini-cake lollipop, or a mouthful of cotton candy.  Paired with the newly renovated, modern decor of The Belamar Hotel in Manhattan Beach, it was a dynamic display that could not be matched.  Maybe not even by The Parker itself :)

Sarah & Cezanne both wanted their guests to enjoy an array of tasty mini desserts as well as having a custom wedding cake that incorporated the pattern they created which was seen throughout their wedding.  We used edible frosting sheets to print the pattern on the cake as well as on the sugar cookies and then created handmade sugar orchids to surround the top tier of the cake. I have to say that my sister outdid herself with these flowers…they are gorgeous!

For the mini desserts we decided to pull the yellow and orange color scheme throughout the look by adding cute candy to the cupcakes and using liners that matched too!

We then dipped the chocolate cake pops and pretzels in matching chocolate as well.

And last, but not least the glorious little mini key lime pies, passion fruit, coconut, macadamia nut tarts, and monogram cookies…aren’t they cute!
