Pretty Pink Bridal Shower

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

A few months back I had the pleasure of working with some of my best wedding girlfriends for our friend Leila of Be Inspired PR’s bridal shower!  I sadly was out of town for my trip to Texas for my class with Mike McCarey, but my sister was still able to make this gorgeous cake for her shower!  The details for this shower were beyond dreamy!  Courtney of Joyful Weddings & Events, Carissa of JL Designs, & Kellie of Be Inspired PR put the shower together and the lovely Jessica Claire took the gorgeous photos!

This shower was so amazing that it got featured in a four page spread in Bride Guide Magazine & on Green Wedding Shoes! Definitely check out Jen’s blog to hear about ALL the details for this shower!

Coca Cola Bottle & Horse Head Crazy Cakes

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

Recently at Sweet & Saucy Shop we have been getting a lot of custom cake orders that don’t have anything to do with weddings!  It has been a lot of fun to see how we can turn cake into such fun shapes and of course the reactions we get from our clients make it worth all the effort!

This first cake I did a few months back for a 50th Birthday Bash that was all centered around The GodFather.  Paige from Bash Co Events & Kelly from Yes Please Design put the party on and needed a Horse Head Cake so I guess I was the lady to call.  Kelly not only does design & florals, but she also does amazing mini cupcakes too & provided the desserts for the table.  I had a great time working with these two talented ladies & of course have to share some of the photos from this fabulous party! Thanks to Charley Star for these great images!

Kelly did an amazing sketch of what she wanted to have the dessert table look like & I really think it all came together!

They wanted a horse head on a platter, but didn’t want it too gruesome looking.  I took the approach of more of a sculpture style look to it and choose not to give it realistic eyes, but rather keep the whole cake one color.

Here it was being brought out to the birthday boy! Of course it had to be Red Velvet Cake inside!

I just LOVED the cannolis they did…too much fun!

Here are a couple close up shots I took at the bakery!  Kelly wanted me to base the cake off of this Anthropologie candle.

Overall this party was a lot of fun & I’m so glad I could add to the excitement of the night!

Last week  we also had the chance to make a really fun and REALLY LARGE cake in the shape of a Coca Cola Bottle!  The cake was a birthday surprise for a lady who loved her some Coca Cola!  The cake was about 3 1/2 feet long and we even split the cake into 3 flavor sections!  They had Red Velvet, Coconut, & Chocolate Espresso Cake!

Kyong and I basically tag teamed this large cake and overall I was really happy with how it turned out!

Here are some start to finish photos…

Once we airbrushed it and added the lettering it was a real looking bottle!  This particular bottle is a special edition version of Coca Cola and was quite a lot of fun to mimic.

We had coke spilling out of the bottle and painted the birthday girl’s name on it.

Of course our sweet Hayley had to get in on the fun too!  We are so glad to have her on the team full time along with Kyong!  The team is growing and we are loving it!

New Special Occasion Cakes!

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Although we do mostly wedding cakes at the shop we also love making special occasion cakes to help people celebrate that special day in their lives!  These types of cakes can sometimes require a lot more work and detail then wedding cakes, but I find that it’s all or nothing when it comes to them because when you say you will make someone a cake that replicates a real life item it either looks like it or not…not too much room for error.  With that being said, my big undertaking this month was a DJ Turntable Cake.  I was pretty happy with how it came out, but definitely underestimated the hours I would have to put into it!

IMG_8614.JPG

And since it was a 1st Birthday Cake we added a special element for the birthday boy!

IMG_8611.JPG

This next cake was for a 25th birthday party!  She loved peacock feathers and knew her color scheme, so we took that and ran with it!  My sister made the sugar flower and feathers and I think they are amazing!

Kid’s cakes are a lot of fun too, but I try to make sure they still follow my style and don’t get too overdone…here is a Panda Bear Cake with tiny sugar flowers and butterflies!

IMG_8459.JPG

My assistant, Louisa, made the Panda Bear and I think it turned out great! I love the half smile and cute little face!

Now sometimes people don’t have a lot of money to spend on a special occasion cake, but want something beautiful and delicious, so I always suggest the rustic style cream cheese frosting cakes with fresh flower accents because I think they are just as gorgeous in their own simplistic way!

IMG_8628.JPG

We also got to do a recent Sweet Sixteen Birthday Cake and she wanted a princess tiara crown and a bold sugar flower!

Lastly one of my favorite cakes recently was for a small wedding we did last weekend.  My new intern, Kyong, is definitely an artist and when I showed her the design I wanted to have painted on the cake she did it better than I could’ve imagined.  I was also quite happy with this garden rose sugar flower I made.  I wasn’t sure how I would like the flower once it had the red tips on it, but I was pleasantly surprised…I think it made it pop and really showed the gorgeous petals off!

Well thanks for stopping by to check out my blog!  I’m currently in Texas and about to run off to my first day of class with Mike McCarey! We will be learning cake structure for crazy cakes and will be remaking this fantastic Big Bird Cake that Mike made for a Food Network Competition…wish me luck!

Lots of Cakes!

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Well, since there has been a lack of blogging these last couple months that only has to mean one thing…lots and lots of cakes!!! Here are just a couple cakes that I thought I would share with you…we’ve had a lot of fun special occasion cakes lately, some small and some large, but all of the clients behind the cakes were a blast to work with and hopefully enjoyed the cakes we made them!

First up is the flip flop cake that we made for a recent 50th birthday party that was hawaiian themed.  It was a ton of fun to make and the hibiscus flower that my sister made was the perfect accent to the cake!

Then next couple photos are of a recent wedding cake with sugar flowers, a baby shower cake with sugar booties, and a birthday cake with a motorcycle that was printed on our edible frosting sheets.

This next cake was a replica of part of a couple’s new home they purchased.  They wanted to celebrate their birthdays at their open house and thought what better way to do it then with a custom cake!  I have to give a shout out to my new employee Susie and intern Danielle who helped a ton on this cake…thanks ladies!

These next photos are from a recent 50th birthday celebration for two ladies.  Gervel has been a fabulous client of mine and I was so happy to get the chance to help her and her best friend out with cakes and mini cupcakes for their special day!

Another cake that was a lot of fun to make was for Bonnie Tsang, who is a fabulous photographer and friend of mine.  She wanted to get her sister a fun birthday cake that had her favorite theme throughout it…Anchors/Sailing!  The front of the cake had a cute anchor on it too!

And last, but not least is a Roulette cake we did for a recent birthday party!  One of my previous brides sent me a client of hers who wanted a fun birthday cake that celebrated her husband’s favorite hobby.  It was a TON of work, but I was quite happy with how it turned out!

Communion Cake

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Well, I am sticking to my word and posting for the third time this week…I know…it really can’t be true, but by golly I did it!  (I might even try for four posts…I don’t want to get ahead of myself though).  This cake was requested by a client of mine for their little boy’s first communion.  I sent them a bunch of inspirational photos of cakes that I liked and they fell in love with a design from the Pink Cake Box. Normally I always try to do original designs for the most part, but I also loved their cake design and so I went with the basic look, but added my own little Sweet & Saucy touch to it.  Overall I was really happy with how it turned out and I wanted to share a couple details of it with you!

The color scheme was shades of brown, light gold/tan, and white so we decided to color the fondant a light brown shade.  The cake was buttermilk cake with lemon cream and fresh raspberries and chocolate cake with chocolate ganache and espresso kahlua cream cheese frosting.

Then I printed the message on edible frosting sheets and applied it to a thin piece of fondant.  Then I applied it to the cake.  To add a little extra detail I piped on white royal icing dots for the border.

The main detail of the cake was the Bible and rosary necklace.  I made the Bible out of carrot cake and iced it with a thin layer of buttercream and then added a strip of fondant for the “pages”.  I used a scoring tool to make the page marks.

I then added the “cover” of fondant to the Bible.  I again used the edible frosting sheets for the print out of “Holy Bible”.  I placed it on a piece of light brown fondant and used a scoring tool to make the etching pattern and royal icing for the mini dots.

I then made the edible sugar necklace and attached a tiny cross to the bottom of it.  I laid it on top of the Bible and let it fall down the cake slightly.  To add a little more detail to the cake I used small round circle cutters to add some dots around the tiers and then piped royal icing dots.  Lastly I sprayed the whole cake with luster dust and viola…it was done!

Now I couldn’t leave without sharing some recent photos of the dessert studio.  The hubby and I stopped by today to check out the paint job and I was in the “posing” mood so I grabbed the camera and gave it to him so he could take photos of me modeling my recent kitchen improvements!

The walls all were painted…everything white, except for in my office I wanted 3 out of the four walls painted grey.  The color scheme in there is grey, yellow, and white.

Here are some more shots inside the bakery part of it.

The flooring gets done tomorrow!  I am going with the polished concrete look…think modern, vintage-like!

And last, but not least is a photo of my amazing assistant!  I wanted to introduce her to you and publicly thank her for making my life SO much easier!  You’re the best Louisa!

Thanks for stopping by the blog!  Hope you have a fabulous week!

Baby Shower Cake Plus Cookies & Cupcakes

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

There will be more photo shoots pictures to come, but in the meantime I wanted to share with you a recent baby shower cake I did.  This was for a fun mommy-to-be and she basically said she wanted a cute, girly cake for her little princess, so this is what I created!  The inside was Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting…yummy!

Here are some photos along the way of the process…

These other two photos are of recent orders…the first was for a law school graduate who wanted the weight scale on his cookies with the school’s colors.  The last photo is of a mini Red Velvet Cupcake with Cream Cheese Frosting.  We then made mini sugar flowers to match the invitations.

Thanks for stopping by and checking out my sweets!
