New Wedding Cake Designs

Friday, November 4th, 2011

I thought I would share some new cake designs we’ve done lately!  Up first one of my favorites from this last summer.  A peacock feather bohemian style head piece inspired the cake design.  We made the cake head piece all out of sugar and then did a white on white pattern for the base of the cake to give it some texture.

I just love the color palette for this cake.

Up next an example of a romantic wedding cake with touches of blush pink and white sugar roses cascading up the front.

This cake is definitely more modern with a bold color and pattern on the base tier and then a sugar peony we colored silver.

This is one of my favorite all white on white wedding cakes…it’s so delicate and romantic looking!

This next cake was inspired by a cake design from The Caketress that one of my clients loved and then we put our own spin on it to incorporate her wedding style and design.

Last but not least a sampling of cakes to mimic the iconic “Cakes” painting by Wayne Thiebaud.  Irene did a great job with all of these cakes and the client loved them!

Mod Themed Wedding Shoot

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

I am so happy to share this next photo shoot with you!  I had the pleasure of working with some of my best girlfriends in the industry again on a fun 1950’s Mod inspired wedding shoot!  Jesi Haack and Jasmine Star dreamed up the fun concept and I think it turned out fabulous.  Carissa from JL Designs did the gorgeous florals and design as well and Wiley Valentine created the perfect invitations and paper designs.

I had a really great time making the cake.  I took strips of fondant and coiled them together and painted them with a metallic gold color.  I love the movement of the design and how quirky it is!

Modern, Fun Wedding!

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Well I am back safe & sound from Italy…I had the most amazing time there and will share more with you soon, but first I thought I would feature one of my favorite weddings from last year that I’ve been dying to show you.  I once again got to work with a fabulous dream team of other vendors, with my dear friend Jesi, from Jesi Haack Weddings at the helm.  Below Jesi describes the fun & unique elements that made this wedding one of a kind!

62145_475496941494_659221494_6767780_3960287_n

Jesi says….

“Alicia & Scott are hilarious!  Scott is one of the writers for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, so of course they wanted their wedding to portray their awesome sense of humor.  They also have the BEST story of how they got together.  Scott is known for his well manicured beard.  Alicia is known for exceptionally large (yet beautiful) teeth.  Sooooo, we took that and with the help from Karrie Pyke Designs and Posh Paperie, made that the apex of our design.  It was my most favorite element.  The rest just fell in to place, especially with the clean, crisp style of Carissa from JL Designs.  She spray painted succulents white!!  WHAT??  They realized my *not so secret* dream with their 1st dance to my all time favorite song, “Glory of Love” by Peter Cetera.  AND Scott’s dancing in his scuba gear.  And who freaking better to capture the entire thing???  Max Wanger.  Done Deal.  Enjoy their story.”

I had such a great time setting up this dessert display!  I loved the modern, clean look to it and the color scheme is definitely right up my ally!  Jesi made the most amazing backdrop for me and I couldn’t of been happier with it!  This was the first time we made a white succulent sugar flower too and I have to say it is one of my favorites now!

Sweet & Saucy Shop on TLC’s Fabulous Cakes

Monday, August 9th, 2010

So hopefully by now all of you have had a chance to see our Fabulous Cakes episode on TLC!  It was such a great experience and I feel really blessed to have been asked to do it.  To tell you the truth it was a last minute whirlwind experience that I basically only had 2 days to plan for.  I had been in contacts with TLC for a while about me pitching a wedding for the show and each time it fell through and then 2 days before Kristin & Michael’s wedding they confirmed everything and I said yes!  We had cameras in our studio for 3 days straight and let me tell you that is quite an experience.  I had no clue what they would use and how they would edit me and my shop, but overall I was really happy with how it turned out!

It was such a pleasure to work on Kristin & Michael’s wedding and I could not of asked for a better couple for this show.  I was actually already booked for their wedding when I was approached for the show and when they said they were up for it too I was so happy.  We basically made their cake bigger & better than we had planned it to be and even threw in a groom’s cake (which I will talk about later).

This wedding definitely wouldn’t have been the same without the incredibly talented and sweet Angel Swanson of Events of Love & Splendor who did the wedding planning & design!  She made my job so easy!

Once I met with Kristin I was so inspired by her and her creativity.  She designed and made the invitations herself and I have to say they are some of the most gorgeous ones I have seen.  She pulled such inspiration from the location of Rancho Las Lomas and really wanted to pull in the spanish tiles that they had there, spanish style lace, and of course her grandmother’s vintage buttons (if you watched the show)!

0004

0083

0084

We made silicone molds of her grandmother’s buttons, handpainted the tile design on the cake, took the tile pattern and used it for a depression & impression on the cake, made a giant sugar flower anenome flower since that was her favorite and finally lined the cake with spanish lace.  This cake was certainly one of my most daring designs that pushed the envelope, but I was truly proud of it once it all came together.  I LOVED how Michael captured their reaction when they first saw their wedding cake!

Of course we also had do to a full on dessert bar for them as well!  Angel did a fabulous backdrop for us that really made it all pop!  We made custom sugar cookies with Kristin’s printed designs, cake lollipops, mini cupcakes, mini key lime pies, and chocolate chunk cookies

One interesting aspect of the wedding and show is that I was actually asked to make a second cake that would be featured as well, so Kristin wanted to surprise Mike with a groom’s cake.  Kristin and Mike love their dog Baxter like a child and he was even a part of their wedding party.  Kristin thought Mike would flip if I made a 3D dog for him and so that was my mission. There was actually quite a lot of drama that occurred with me making Baxter (which would’ve made for great TV), but I guess they ran out of time for the episode so that is why he didn’t make it on the show.  Nonetheless here is the cute little guy!

Again I loved seeing their reaction!

Thanks so much to my incredible team at the shop…we all know I could never do anything with you!  A special thanks to my mom who keeps me sane, encourages me daily, gives me the best advice a girl could ask for, and is the most amazing business partner ever!

Goodies Galore!

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Well get ready for another random post full of lots of photos!  After a couple weeks at the shop I always have plenty of random orders that I photography (with my new camera of course!), so I thought today would be a good day to show them off! Hope you enjoy!

First up an adorable communion cake I did for a little girl.  I love how the clouds turned out! We used an edible frosting sheet to print the angels and verse and then piped a pearl border around it.

IMG_1216.JPG

IMG_1223.JPG

Since the clouds were just too much fun I thought I would show a quick tutorial on how we made them.  First roll random size balls of fondant and stick them together with a little dab of water or egg whites.  Then roll a thin sheet of fondant and cover the balls.  Next sculpt around the balls to form one large cloud.  And finally I airbrushed the whole cake with pearl luster dust to give it a shimmer.

Next we did a gorgeous homespun style cake and cupcakes for the sweetest bride! They LOVED our red velvet, so they got a small two tier cake and lots of yummy cupcakes for their guests.  I love when my clients are so much fun to work with!  I also had to snap some photos of the beautiful flowers they had…I love the rustic, wildflower look!

Another fun cake I got to make recently was a Lego style cake for a cute little boy who turned 4 years old!  They wanted a little Lego firefighter on the cake as well, so I sculpted one for them.  I thought it would be fun to incorporate the Lego style with the wording too, so Tim designed the graphics for his name and age…I thought they turned out great!

We love doing custom orders too, so these next photos are some special orders we did for our clients.  First up are some custom decorated cake lollipops for a recent baby shower.

IMG_2296.JPG

Next we did some logo style brownies for a recent birthday party.

IMG_2388.JPG

I love when our clients come to us with fun ideas!  Our client wanted to surprise her boyfriend for his birthday with custom cupcakes that had his face on it…how great are these!

Another fun surprise was when I was asked by Tiffany’s in South Coast Plaza to make a cake for one of their client’s anniversary.  They wanted lots of sugar peonies and pearls!
