Utterly Engaged Feature!

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

I had the pleasure of working with the lovely ladies from Utterly Engaged again for their 1 year anniversary issue!  When I heard the idea for the shoot, “Sew in Love”, and then the amazing team I was going to get to work with I was SOOO excited! The team included…Art Direction & Stylist by Sugar and FluffLucia of DL/sh Design and UtterlyEngaged, and props & design from Jeni from Found Vintage Rentals!  The fabulous florals were from my girl Carissa from JL Designs…she never disappoints! Also the paper painted bouquets by Kristy Rice of Momental Designs were too much fun! I have to say a major thank you to Paula & Mike from Luna Photo for the gorgeous photos; I absolutely love working with them!  Here’s some of the pages from the online magazine!

The models were simply gorgeous & got perfectly beautified by the talented Fiore Beauty.  Their lovely gowns were by Elizabeth Dye of The English DeptSarah SevenHolly Stalder, and Joan Shum.

Lucia was sweet enough to send me over a couple more photos from the shoot and I had to post them!  I loved making this cake & seeing it come to life.  We made lots of custom vintage molds & put sugar paste in them & then painted them.  I loved how it turned out!

We’ve recently been starting to make a lot of french macaroons at the shop and boy can I tell you that I am now addicted to them! My talented assistant pastry chef Susie has been coming up with so many scrumptious options that I think I’ve gained 5 lbs. just taste testing them!

We also made some yummy little french desserts and drizzled them in pink frosting!  I wanted to make homemade donuts too, but sadly we ran out of time, so lucky me I have a donut shop right next door to my shop & picked some up for props!  Speaking of props…how jealous are you of Jeni from Found Vintage Rentals…her collection is AMAZING!

Thanks again Lucia, Henny, & Eva for this fun opportunity!  The next photos are from the talented Kristin from Kristin Eldridge Photography!  Kristin blesses me all the time with her many talents and again came by my shop and took some photos for me of our new window display….it is quite hard to capture the cutest of it all with the funky windows & reflections, but Kristin did a great job!

Even though my good friend Jesi, from Jesi Haack Weddings, was almost about to pop out a little baby she still was sweet enough to come over to my shop & help me put it all together!  We got inspiration from the recent Martha Stewart Weddings magazine and made the fabric hoops for the main display.  We then hung some flag banners that Jesi had from previous weddings and we were basically all set!

Sweet & Saucy Shop on TLC’s Fabulous Cakes

Monday, August 9th, 2010

So hopefully by now all of you have had a chance to see our Fabulous Cakes episode on TLC!  It was such a great experience and I feel really blessed to have been asked to do it.  To tell you the truth it was a last minute whirlwind experience that I basically only had 2 days to plan for.  I had been in contacts with TLC for a while about me pitching a wedding for the show and each time it fell through and then 2 days before Kristin & Michael’s wedding they confirmed everything and I said yes!  We had cameras in our studio for 3 days straight and let me tell you that is quite an experience.  I had no clue what they would use and how they would edit me and my shop, but overall I was really happy with how it turned out!

It was such a pleasure to work on Kristin & Michael’s wedding and I could not of asked for a better couple for this show.  I was actually already booked for their wedding when I was approached for the show and when they said they were up for it too I was so happy.  We basically made their cake bigger & better than we had planned it to be and even threw in a groom’s cake (which I will talk about later).

This is the first time I had the pleasure of Michael Norwood shooting a wedding of mine and it was truly a pleasure; his photos are simply breathtaking.

This wedding definitely wouldn’t have been the same without the incredibly talented and sweet Angel Swanson of Events of Love & Splendor who did the wedding planning & design!  She made my job so easy!

Once I met with Kristin I was so inspired by her and her creativity.  She designed and made the invitations herself and I have to say they are some of the most gorgeous ones I have seen.  She pulled such inspiration from the location of Rancho Las Lomas and really wanted to pull in the spanish tiles that they had there, spanish style lace, and of course her grandmother’s vintage buttons (if you watched the show)!

We made silicone molds of her grandmother’s buttons, handpainted the tile design on the cake, took the tile pattern and used it for a depression & impression on the cake, made a giant sugar flower anenome flower since that was her favorite and finally lined the cake with spanish lace.  This cake was certainly one of my most daring designs that pushed the envelope, but I was truly proud of it once it all came together.  I LOVED how Michael captured their reaction when they first saw their wedding cake!

Of course we also had do to a full on dessert bar for them as well!  Angel did a fabulous backdrop for us that really made it all pop!  We made custom sugar cookies with Kristin’s printed designs, cake lollipops, mini cupcakes, mini key lime pies, and chocolate chunk cookies

One interesting aspect of the wedding and show is that I was actually asked to make a second cake that would be featured as well, so Kristin wanted to surprise Mike with a groom’s cake.  Kristin and Mike love their dog Baxter like a child and he was even a part of their wedding party.  Kristin thought Mike would flip if I made a 3D dog for him and so that was my mission. There was actually quite a lot of drama that occurred with me making Baxter (which would’ve made for great TV), but I guess they ran out of time for the episode so that is why he didn’t make it on the show.  Nonetheless here is the cute little guy!

Again I loved seeing their reaction!

Thanks so much to my incredible team at the shop…we all know I could never do anything with you!  A special thanks to my mom who keeps me sane, encourages me daily, gives me the best advice a girl could ask for, and is the most amazing business partner ever!

Favorite Cake of the Year!

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Well by the title of the post you can probably guess that I am in love with the cake I’m posting today!  I love working with Jesi Haack & Carissa from JL Designs because I know that I am going to have an amazing client that has wonderful taste! Joanna and Brian were just that!  They gave me full control when it came to the cake and I was so excited when I found out their look.  I had been wanting to create this style of cake for a while now and once I pitched the idea to Joanna and she said yes, I was SO excited!

There is definitely more to their wedding than my cake of course…they wanted to have a “Great Gatsby” style wedding and I have to say they definitely pulled it off! They also had their wedding at one of my favorite venues…Marvimon!  The gorgeous photos were taken by Annie McElwain, who I can’t wait to work with again!

Carissa’s bouquet of balsa wood flowers was simply stunning!

Jesi & her hubby Ryan created an amazing walkway to their alter!

Finally…the CAKE!  My idea for the cake was to create one large open garden rose that cascaded all down the cake, but had a definitely center to it that started at the top.  I loved the idea of it being all white!  It is definitely my style with its modern look that is simplistic, but yet has great detail!  Hope you like it!

And of course it has to taste really delicious too!

Thanks Joanna & Brian for trusting me to make your wedding cake…I had such a wonderful time!

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

So I am finally allowed to spill the beans…I’m going to be on TLC’s new summer time cake show, FABULOUS CAKES!!!  I definitely have to say that taping for 3 days straight inside my shop was one of the craziest experiences of my life and soon all of you will get to see it!  There was a lot of fun, a lot of stress, and a lot of CAKE!

It was so crazy having cameras record my every move, word, and facial expression…to be honest I’m a little scared to see how I come out on TV, but I’m crossing my fingers that I don’t seem too weird!

Bows, Ribbons & Frills

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Wedding season is still upon us and that means LOTS of cakes to share with you! This first wedding was actually from last year & it was for a friend of mine!  It was a pleasure making their cake & mini cupcakes & overall I was really happy with their white and white wedding cake!  They wanted elegant and I think that’s what I gave them!

Picture 49

We made white sugar peonies for the top of the cake, a large sugar bow for the middle, brush embroidery flowers, and fondant draping to resemble her dress.

The cake was on a table all by itself so it would stand out and then they also had a table full of mini cupcakes!

They wanted a little bird topper too, so we did a sculpted pair & painted them in a champagne shimmer.

The sweet bride also wanted to surprise her parents with an anniversary cake since they were celebrating their special day along with them!  They wanted to keep it simplistic & use fresh succulents…I love the look of it!

Featured in YWD Magazine

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

I had the pleasure of working with a fabulous team of vendors a couple months ago on a table design feature for the Your Wedding Day Party here in California!  The day went perfectly  & the whole event was a great success!  What is even more fun is that we got to also be featured in the new issue of YWD Magazine!  Here are the gorgeous images!

Picture 11

Our look was “Contemporary” & here was the inspiration for the table design!

Picture 10

And here it is brought to life…

Picture 9

For the cake, when I think of modern/contemporary I envision a clean design with bold pops of color & design elements.  They were doing starbursts for part of the table design so I decided to create all custom jewel molds & place them in a way that made a large starburst.  We then accented the bottom tier with navy square jewels that created a band.

Picture 7

And how gorgeous is this set up!

Here is the whole team who made it all happen…
