Featured in Southern Weddings Magazine

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

I am so excited to share with you the shoot we did for Southern Weddings Magazine!  This magazine is definitely one of the most stunning wedding magazine out there and I was so honored to be featured in it.  The team of people I worked with was nothing short of a dream team!  The talented Nancy, from So Happi Together, and Melissa from, The Loveliest Day, planned, designed, and put together the whole shoot!  Jeni, from Found Vintage Rentals, brought all of her fabulous vintage furniture and props…she makes me so jealous with her collection!  I was so into all the paper goods that Mae Mae Paperie designed for the shoot! The simply lovely Megan from Honey & Poppies did the luscious florals and Justin & Amelia, the amazing husband and wife team from Amelia Lyons Photography, simply blew me away with the photos!

I absolutely loved the color scheme for the shoot and we had fun pulling in lots of design detail with the desserts.  We did a main center cake with white on white lace and then two side cakes in chocolate ganache frosting.  I adored all the signage that Mae Mae Paperie made for me and thought it looked so cute on my desserts!

Gorgeous Wedding Cakes

Monday, November 15th, 2010

I’m so excited to share some recent wedding cakes we’ve done!  These are some of my favorites from the past summer and I hope you enjoy them!

First up, a Victorian style cake with gorgeous, light tones and intricate molds!

This next cake is a completely different style…modern, bold, and very unique!  We based the cake off the design of the bride & groom’s invitation and I was very excited to see it come to life.  Did I mention that is was HUGE!

This cake is definitely my style…clean, modern, gorgeous colors, and perfect pops of design!

This dahlia sugar flower that my sister made has to be one of my favorites ever and the sugar threads that we made brought the design full circle.

Lastly, this mustard yellow vintage lace cake was a pleasure to make.  Kyong and I loved the look of this cake and placing it on a wooden log pulled it all together!

Lots of Eye Candy!

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

Now that summer has officially ended I thought I would have time to breathe and the amount of weddings each weekend would slow down, turns out that October is one of our busiest months ever!  The last couple months we have had the pleasure of making so many wedding cakes for amazing people and I am truly blessed to look back on this summer and see what we did!  Here are some photos of recent cakes we have done…enjoy!

First up, one of my favorites!  We got to explore the Wedge Wood style for this cake and I really loved how it turned out!  We searched hi and low for real pieces that we could make custom molds out of and I love the detail that each mold brought to the cake.

This cake we did a whimsy style white flower with a black center and then did hand painting on the cake that matched the invitations for the wedding.

Here is a fun peak at the whole set up from the fabulous Amelia Lyon!

I also got the chance to make a cake for my dear friend Nancy’s daughter.  I went to pastry school with Nancy and we have kept in touch over the years, so it was quite an honor to have her ask me to make her daughter’s wedding cake!

This bridal shower cake the client wanted it to be fun & girly, so we did white crystal sugar all over the white fondant cake and then accented it with a fushia sugar flower, black fondant ruffle, and three black brooches.

This wedding cake below is very sweet and taylored looking.  Sugar bows, brooches, and quilting…oh my!

This next cake was for a small Indian style wedding we recently did.  I loved the pattern and colors that we used on this cake!

When writing this post I can see that we have made a LOT of fushia sugar flowers lately!  Although a lot of the cakes have similar flowers, the overall design is completely different.  This cake had brown ribbons, damask, white chocolate jewels & brooches.

This next cake was on the simple side.  The main accent piece we made was designed after the bride’s dress.  She had white jewels on her dress, but we wanted to pull in the avocado color in her wedding so we did the jewels in that color.

IMG_1676

Another sweet pink cake we did for a birthday party!  The design was based off of a cake from Confetti Cakes that the client liked…very cute style!

This last design was a very fun one to see come to life.  I loved the gardenia flower and the whimsy style flowers & vines. I made them all out of sugar paste with new molds that we made.  Since grey is one of my favorite colors I loved seeing it on a cake too!

French Inspired Photo Shoot

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

I recently had the pleasure of working with Joy de Vivre, Florette Designs, & Michael & Anna Costa on a French inspired photo shoot that was featured on Style Me Pretty!  I was blown away when I saw the gorgeous photos and really loved how it all turned out!  It was great working with such talented vendors & I thought they did an amazing job.

For the wedding cake I was really inspired by a wedding dress that was completely covered in white lace & doilies with an underlying color.  I knew someday I wanted to recreate it in cake and this was the perfect opportunity.  We covered the base of the cake in a light peach color and then tediously cut out individual fondant lace pieces that were added to the cake.  It was definitely a labor of love, but I have to say I loved the finish product.

Utterly Engaged Feature!

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

I had the pleasure of working with the lovely ladies from Utterly Engaged again for their 1 year anniversary issue!  When I heard the idea for the shoot, “Sew in Love”, and then the amazing team I was going to get to work with I was SOOO excited! The team included…Art Direction & Stylist by Sugar and FluffLucia of DL/sh Design and UtterlyEngaged, and props & design from Jeni from Found Vintage Rentals!  The fabulous florals were from my girl Carissa from JL Designs…she never disappoints! Also the paper painted bouquets by Kristy Rice of Momental Designs were too much fun! I have to say a major thank you to Paula & Mike from Luna Photo for the gorgeous photos; I absolutely love working with them!  Here’s some of the pages from the online magazine!

Lucia was sweet enough to send me over a couple more photos from the shoot and I had to post them!  I loved making this cake & seeing it come to life.  We made lots of custom vintage molds & put sugar paste in them & then painted them.  I loved how it turned out!

We’ve recently been starting to make a lot of french macaroons at the shop and boy can I tell you that I am now addicted to them! My talented assistant pastry chef Susie has been coming up with so many scrumptious options that I think I’ve gained 5 lbs. just taste testing them!

We also made some yummy little french desserts and drizzled them in pink frosting!  I wanted to make homemade donuts too, but sadly we ran out of time, so lucky me I have a donut shop right next door to my shop & picked some up for props!  Speaking of props…how jealous are you of Jeni from Found Vintage Rentals…her collection is AMAZING!

Thanks again Lucia, Henny, & Eva for this fun opportunity!  The next photos are from the talented Kristin from Kristin Eldridge Photography!  Kristin blesses me all the time with her many talents and again came by my shop and took some photos for me of our new window display….it is quite hard to capture the cutest of it all with the funky windows & reflections, but Kristin did a great job!

Even though my good friend Jesi, from Jesi Haack Weddings, was almost about to pop out a little baby she still was sweet enough to come over to my shop & help me put it all together!  We got inspiration from the recent Martha Stewart Weddings magazine and made the fabric hoops for the main display.  We then hung some flag banners that Jesi had from previous weddings and we were basically all set!

Sweet & Saucy Shop on TLC’s Fabulous Cakes

Monday, August 9th, 2010

So hopefully by now all of you have had a chance to see our Fabulous Cakes episode on TLC!  It was such a great experience and I feel really blessed to have been asked to do it.  To tell you the truth it was a last minute whirlwind experience that I basically only had 2 days to plan for.  I had been in contacts with TLC for a while about me pitching a wedding for the show and each time it fell through and then 2 days before Kristin & Michael’s wedding they confirmed everything and I said yes!  We had cameras in our studio for 3 days straight and let me tell you that is quite an experience.  I had no clue what they would use and how they would edit me and my shop, but overall I was really happy with how it turned out!

0099

It was such a pleasure to work on Kristin & Michael’s wedding and I could not of asked for a better couple for this show.  I was actually already booked for their wedding when I was approached for the show and when they said they were up for it too I was so happy.  We basically made their cake bigger & better than we had planned it to be and even threw in a groom’s cake (which I will talk about later).

This wedding definitely wouldn’t have been the same without the incredibly talented and sweet Angel Swanson of Events of Love & Splendor who did the wedding planning & design!  She made my job so easy!

Once I met with Kristin I was so inspired by her and her creativity.  She designed and made the invitations herself and I have to say they are some of the most gorgeous ones I have seen.  She pulled such inspiration from the location of Rancho Las Lomas and really wanted to pull in the spanish tiles that they had there, spanish style lace, and of course her grandmother’s vintage buttons (if you watched the show)!

0004

0083

0084

We made silicone molds of her grandmother’s buttons, handpainted the tile design on the cake, took the tile pattern and used it for a depression & impression on the cake, made a giant sugar flower anenome flower since that was her favorite and finally lined the cake with spanish lace.  This cake was certainly one of my most daring designs that pushed the envelope, but I was truly proud of it once it all came together.  I LOVED how Michael captured their reaction when they first saw their wedding cake!

Of course we also had do to a full on dessert bar for them as well!  Angel did a fabulous backdrop for us that really made it all pop!  We made custom sugar cookies with Kristin’s printed designs, cake lollipops, mini cupcakes, mini key lime pies, and chocolate chunk cookies

One interesting aspect of the wedding and show is that I was actually asked to make a second cake that would be featured as well, so Kristin wanted to surprise Mike with a groom’s cake.  Kristin and Mike love their dog Baxter like a child and he was even a part of their wedding party.  Kristin thought Mike would flip if I made a 3D dog for him and so that was my mission. There was actually quite a lot of drama that occurred with me making Baxter (which would’ve made for great TV), but I guess they ran out of time for the episode so that is why he didn’t make it on the show.  Nonetheless here is the cute little guy!

Again I loved seeing their reaction!

Thanks so much to my incredible team at the shop…we all know I could never do anything with you!  A special thanks to my mom who keeps me sane, encourages me daily, gives me the best advice a girl could ask for, and is the most amazing business partner ever!
